Kennedys, a Legal 500 and Chambers-ranked global firm serving insurers and the London market, has multiple openings for Mid-Level Associates or Senior Counsel to join its growing Austin and Houston offices.  Remote and hybrid candidates with the right experience will be considered. In this role, the attorney will primarily represent insurance companies in coverage litigation but may also be involved in defense litigation.  This is an excellent opportunity to join a global law firm expanding its capabilities in Texas.

The ideal candidate will have experience with diverse types of insurance coverage, such as: excess and surplus lines, general liability, construction defect, D&O, environmental, personal and advertising injury claims in Texas. Required experience

  • At least three years of litigation experience
  • Must be licensed to practice in Texas. License in Louisiana a plus
  • Superior research writing and communication skills
  • Familiarity with general defense litigation is a plus
  • Practical case management experience in federal court is preferred
  • Ability to draft pleadings, discovery, and motions; take and defend depositions and attend court appearances
  • Arbitration and trial experience is beneficial

TEXAS PROPERTY AND CASUALTY INSURANCE GUARANTY ASSOCIATION (TPCIGA)

  • A non-profit, organization created by the Texas Legislature providing limited protection to policyholders and loss payees of insolvent property and casualty insurers licensed in Texas.

Senior Claims Attorney

Claims attorney for TPCIGA, providing legal support for the Association’s claims functions under the direction of the Claims Director. Supervises legal assistant.

Duties / Responsibilities: Oversight of outside law firms representing TPCIGA and insureds of impaired insurers; reviews claims in litigation, determining status and evaluating policy and Guaranty Act coverage; provides suggestions regarding claims handling strategies; reviews pleadings and files responses in Texas Receivership Court; works with General Counsel to review and/or prepare documents according to the Guaranty Act or as required by the Board of Directors; represents TPCIGA in Texas Receivership Court and participates in status conferences; attends mediations, settlement conferences, depositions, and trials, as appropriate; and performs other related duties as may be assigned.

Required:  Expertise in insurance defense litigation and coverage issues; Knowledge of the Guaranty Act.  Ability to manage larger more complex docket of claims, including litigation; oversee outside counsel.

Education and Experience: Licensed to practice law in Texas plus at least seven years of experience.
